Etienne sent our blog a post of Bernard-Henri Lévy, interviewed in L’Express about his views on French politics today – the future of its Socialist Party (PS). That appears on a separate post. This post was written by Etienne Roop, an American politician and political scholar, to give his take on BHL’s take. An English translation by Pam Sacks is in another post of this blog.

En bref, et à mon avis, le mot clé ici est “antilibérale.”  “Libéral” est un euphémisme commun parmi les intellectuels français qui ne veut pas dire la même chose qu’aux aux Etats-Unis.  “Libéral” fait allusion à la politique économique, en particulier à la préférence présumée de l’Amérique (et de la Grande Bretagne–donc l’épithète commune parmi les socialistes de gauche et d’autres gauchistes “Blairites”) pour l’échange libre et les marchés libres.

BHL est libéral, ou au moins plutot libéral pour un Français.  Il est de la gauche, mais pas de la gauche de la gauche.  Il admire la souplesse de l’économie américaine et de la société américaine.  José Bové, par contraste, est de la gauche de la gauche et lutte depuis longtemps contre les forces du “défi américain” (il a détruit un McDo en construction et en conséquence a été incarcéré un court instant) mais aussi contre les forces économiques mondiales (comme l’OGM, organismes génétiquement modifiés) qui menacent l’ordre traditionnel de l’agriculture française. (C’est laitier.)  Pour BHL, JB est un pitre dangéreux qui entrave les changements nécessaires de la société et de l’économie française pour les rendre plus justes et productifs tous les deux.  Par conséquence, il a peur que l’alliance DCB/JB signifie une retraite de la logique du marché commun–une logique de concurrence qui peut aider à changer des institutions françaises stagnantes.  BHL admire en général l’édifice européen et les forces économiques et sociales qu’il met en marche.  Daniel Cohen-Bendit est un “bon européen”–d’où le désir de BHL de voter pour lui.  Mais pour BHL, DCB and JB sont comme l’huile et l’eau:  ils ne se mélangent pas bien.

L’avis de BHL, a-t-il un sens?  Qui se sert de qui?  DCB est un homme très intelligent, même plutot caculateur.  Est-ce qu’il veut démolir l’Europe, son marché commun ou ses réussites des droits de l’homme?  Je ne le pense pas.  DCB/JB, c’était une alliance politique sur un piste politique.  DCB a réussi à cause de sa personnalité télégenique, le niveau bas de la participation politique, quelques autres alliances bien calculées, et–selon plusieurs observateurs–un petit mot d’encouragement à la dernière minute de l’UMP, qui s’intéressait à affaiblir le parti socialiste, encore le rival principal de l’UMP.  Bové etait une épice dans la soupe, pas la soupe elle-même.   Bien sur, beaucoup de choses pour lesquelles JB lutte depuis longtemps–des subventions généreuses pour l’agriculture, le règlement strict de OGM–sont des politiques établies communautaires.  En cas d’une dispute, il n’y a pas de question que DCB gagnerait.

Mais DCB gagnerait quoi?  La communauté européenne n’est pas un gouvernement élu comme celui de la France.  Les institutions communautaires bureaucratiques s’orientent aux gouvernements des états de l’Europe, ni à leurs citoyens individuels ni à leurs partis politiques.  Tout le monde le sait.  Donc l’élection européenne elle-même a un air un peu étrange;  les partis politiques font une fête, mais la plupart des électeurs se sont décidés à rester chez eux.  En cette circonstance, qu’importe cette élection ou le choix to BHL?  Est-ce que ce choix est plus un bruit qu’un signal, ou peut-être l’ouverture mais pas l’opéra?

Le fait le plus important continue: le parti socialiste trébuche encore une fois et reste en crise.  A part de l’alliance DCB/JB, BHL aurait abandonné le parti qu’il a voté dans les présidentielles.  BHL le dit un cadavre.  “And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?”  Est-ce, pour BHL, l’Europe, sans illusions et sans larmes?  Dans le monde qui compte, où va-t-il?  A Sarkozy?  Ailleurs?  (Y a-t-il un ailleurs?)  C’est l’opéra, non, au moins l’opéra de BHL.

Pamela Sacks and Etienne Roop are two of my more erudite students. Pam is learning French by supplementing grammar with translating from French to English. Etienne is progressing by reading and writing French. Below is Pam’s translation of Roop’s recent post on French politics, its take on “liberalism” and “antiliberalism,” and Bernard-Henri Lévy. Lévy is a political, cultural, inetellectual writer and philosopher in France today.

Briefly, in my view, the key word here is “antiliberal.” “Liberal” is commonly used among French intellectuals who do not mean the same thing as in the United States. “Liberal” is an allusion to economic politics, in particular the presumed preference of America (and of Great Britain – therefore the common epithet used among leftist socialists and other leftists, “Blairites”) for free exchange and free markets.

BHL is liberal, or, rather, liberal for a French citizen. He is on the left, but not far left. He admires the suppleness of the American economy and American society. Jose Bove, in contrast, is a more extreme leftist who has been fighting for a long time against the forces of the “American hegemony.” (He destroyed a McDonald’s under construction, and as a result, was incarcerated briefly) but also against the forces of world economics (like OGM, organizations backing genetic modification) that threaten the traditional French agricult ural order. (dairy) For BHL, JB is a dangerous puppet who obstructs the necessary changes in society and in the French economy to make them fair and productive for everyone. As a result, he fears that the alliance between DCB and JB might mean a retreat from the logic of an open market – a logic of competition that is able to help change stagnant French institutions. BHL admires, in general, European institutions and the economic and social forces that they put in motion. DCB is a “good European” – this is why BHL considered voting for him. But for BHL, DCB and JB are like oil and water: they do not mix well.

BHL’s view, does it make sense? Who is using whom? DCB is a very intelligent man and at the same time rather calculating. Does he want to demolish Europe or the common market or his successes on the part of human rights? I don’t think so. DCB/JB was a political alliance on a political trail. DCB succeeded because of his telegenic personality, the new base of political participation, several other carefully calculated alliances, and – according to several observers – a small word of encouragement at the last minute by the UMP, which was interested in a weakened socialist party, still the principal political rival of the UMP. Bove was the spice in the soup, not the soup itself. To be=2 0sure, many things for which JB has fought for a long time – generous subsidies for agriculture, strict regulation of the OGM – are the local political policies. In the event of a dispute, there is no question that DCB would win.

But what would DCB win? The European community is not a government elected like the one in France. The bureaucratic institutions are oriented to the governments of the states of Europe, rather than to individual citizens or their political parties. Everyone knows that. Therefore the European election itself has a bit of a strange air about it; the political parties threw a celebration, but for the most part the voters decided to stay at home. In that situation, what’s the importance of the election or of BHL’s choice? Is this choice more noise than an actual sign, or perhaps the overture but not the opera.

The thing that is the most important continues: The socialist party is stumbling yet another time and remains in crisis.  Apart from the alliance of DCB and JB, BHL would abandon the party that he voted for in the presidential elections. BHL said it is a cadaver.  Is it, for BHL, a Europe without ill usions and without tears? In the world that counts, where he is going? To Sarkozy? Or elsewhere? Is there an elsewhere? It is opera, no, but it is for BHL.

Are any of our more literary, elegant words used by the French? An observant student, Harrison, asked me that very good question today. The French use words like ’sweatshirt,’ ‘prime time,’ ‘dealer,’  ‘people,’ and ‘glamour.’ Why not some of our more elegant words? Do they have them already and only need new and trivial words now?

A hysterical WSJ article about the dangers of Paris. Seems that the situation is worse in NY, but Eric, the student who sent it to me, is wondering about his upcoming trip to the city. I told him that it’s better these days. I remember when you couldn’t even walk a straight line there! Any other people with memories or observations?
